Morgan! Let's start at the beginning. What inspired you to create BURU, and what was the moment you knew this brand/product needed to exist?
The idea for Buru came to me about two weeks after our daughter, Olive, was born. Brett and I ventured out for our first lunch date as new parents. Of course, Olive got hungry, and I realized I had absolutely no way to nurse her without practically disrobing in the middle of the restaurant. Naturally, she started crying...and then I started crying.
That moment made me realize my clothes were working against me. Over the next few weeks, I searched everywhere for pieces that were fashionable, washable, and nursing-friendly, but still felt like me. Everything was either practical but not stylish, or beautiful but completely impractical for motherhood. After talking with other new moms, I realized I wasn't the only one having this struggle. That's when I knew there was a real white space in the market, and Buru was born.
BURU has evolved so beautifully over the years - from a solution for new moms to a brand women wear through every season of life. How has your own journey shaped the evolution of the brand?
I've always said, "Once a mother, always a mother." Motherhood changes you forever, whether your children are newborns or grown adults. While Buru began with nursing-friendly clothing, it quickly became about something much bigger.
As my own life evolved, so did the brand. I wasn't just dressing a nursing mom anymore, I was dressing a woman who wanted clothes that could take her from carpool to cocktails, boardroom to bake sale, dinner parties to date nights. I still believe versatility, comfort, and washability are incredibly important, and I also believe women deserve beautiful clothes that make them feel like themselves. Every collection I design starts with that woman in mind.
Jane Win is all about wearing pieces that tell your story. Is there a piece of jewelry from JW or an item of clothing that holds special meaning for you?
As for Buru, the Mod Dress will always be one of my favorites because it perfectly represents what I hope every Buru piece becomes, a timeless design women truly live their lives in. It isn't about one specific occasion; it's about all of them. Women wear it on vacation, to school events, to dinners and to celebrations. Traditional with a twist has always been my goal. I don't want women buying clothes that sit in their closet waiting for the right moment. I want to design pieces they actually live their lives in.
The Jane Win Sisterhood coin is especially meaningful to me because it celebrates something that's become such a big part of Buru: the incredible community of women who encourage, support, and celebrate one another through every season of life. I also love the two bees on the coin. They symbolize community, but they're also deeply personal because my daughter, who inspired Buru, Olive's middle name is Bee.
You've built BURU alongside your husband, Brett. What's one lesson you've learned about building both a business and a family together?
Building Buru together has taught us to trust each other's strengths. Brett and I approach problems differently, and that's actually one of our greatest advantages. Some seasons require more from one of us than the other, and we've learned to give each other grace through all of it. At the end of the day, we're building both a business and a family. Those two things aren't separate; they're intertwined. It's messy, it's exhausting, it's incredibly rewarding, and I wouldn't want to do it with anyone else.
What advice would you give to women who are dreaming of starting something of their own but are waiting for the "perfect" time?
There is no perfect time. If I had waited until life slowed down, until motherhood felt easy, or until I had all the answers, Buru would never have existed. Sometimes, if you start before you feel ready. You'll figure out so much along the way, and often that's where the magic happens. Along with that comes the understanding that building a business while raising a family means some things will naturally take a little longer, and that's okay. Brett often talks about this. We've chosen to build Buru in a way that lets our kids come along for the journey. It may not be the fastest path, but for us, it's been the most meaningful one.

Favorite vacation destination?
France. Give me incredible food, beautiful architecture, long dinners, and wandering with my family.
Three words your friends would use to describe you.
Creative. Optimistic. Determined.
If you weren't in fashion, what would you be doing?
Interior design, my major in college. I've always loved creating beautiful spaces. Whether it's a room or a wardrobe, I'm really doing the same thing, helping people feel inspired and more like themselves.
