You founded Hunter Bell NYC in 2006 while working full time in fashion in New York City. I was running in those same circles - what an experience! Before I get ahead of myself, give us a little background. Where are you from and where did you get your start?
I was born and raised in the small town of Florence, SC, and then studied fashion design and studio art at the University of Alabama. I spent my summers interning in New York, and after graduation returned to NYC further my design education at Parsons New School. In 2013 I competed in ABC's hit show Fashion Star. After winning the competition, I set out to re-launch my label, Hunter Bell NYC. The line is now carried in over 175 retailers worldwide and online at hunterbellnyc.com.
I am so inspired by the Hunter Bell NYC mission: Hunter Bell is all about creating sophisticated, feminine clothing for the individualist. We give women the confidence to define their own fashion in intricate fabrics and styles that are unique. Can you share a little bit more about what this mission means to you? What inspired you to start the line?
Well I’ve always loved fashion and the creative arts. I used to make clothes for my Barbie dolls. I believe that a good outfit can change your mood and that embracing your personal style emboldens you in all aspects of your life.

I just added the Virginia Dress to my closet, and I want to wear it literally every day. I love the marriage of the traditional fall hues and bold textures and prints in the fall launch. Tell us a little bit more about the Fall Collection – what are you wearing every day?
The Virginia dress is a staff favorite, I’m so glad you love it! The Fall collection was inspired by contrasting colors found in nature and mood boosting prints. I’m wearing the graham top and tucker skirt in tie dye today, and I've been wearing the Selena dress a lot.
Speaking of Jane Win and Hunter Bell pairing well, we LOVE seeing you in Jane Win. You have our Lapis Carved Heart, Full Heart, and Carry Your Heart… Happy to see a fellow heart lover! You also just added three letters to your stack – tell us more about your #JWNeckmess – what drew you to each piece?
Well I adore my JW necklaces, you will rarely ever see me without them on! The initial coins represent each one of my children, and I love having those lay close to my heart all day. The Lapis Carved heart breaks up the solid gold of the coins with some color and the combo is amazing!
You are from the south, started your career and company in New York City, and settled in Texas – one of our favorite places (we love it so much we made a coin dedicated to it!). Is Texas officially HOME? What other TX based brands should we have our eye on?
Texas is now my home. It’s where all my children were born and where we are putting down roots. I was initially nervous about the transition from New York, but my company has seen enormous growth here and I’m forever grateful for that! I also love Freya hats and Transparent Sunglasses.
Being a female entrepreneur is NOT EASY. Not that anyone said it would be 😉 Any advice for those out there looking to make the leap and start their own business?
Don’t give up. It won’t all be easy all the time. If you accept that truth going into it, you will be better equipped to handle the challenging times with grace and perseverance.
