A Note from Jane
We HAVE known each other a long time AND we share the same name and initials which I love. I am a born and bred New Yorker which people often find strange but for me it’s all I know. Who knew spending afternoons sitting on the Met steps all wasn’t normal. Yes, Gossip Girl fans that is exactly what we did and in fact a girl I know from high school was actually a writer on that show. I still live in NYC with my husband, 2 daughters and 4 dogs.
I got my start in magazines as a graphic designer. After graduating from college with an Art History degree and realizing I had no interest in working in a gallery, museum … I went to art school for graphic design. I quickly realized I love the creative problem solving of graphic design.
You have an incredibly robust and diverse career background. Graphic designer at Vogue, Art Director, and entrepreneur. How, and WHY did you start PRIDE+GROOM? What was your “aha” moment?
We all have so many lives! Anyone who starts off thinking they know where they are going to end up is most likely wrong. I worked in the art department of magazines for a long time which was a super fun place to be back in the day. When we all lived and died for the new issues of Vogue, Bazaar, Allure etc. to come out each month so we could see what was going on in the world. There was no internet! I left magazines when I became a mom which allowed me to work and do mom things. Actually, that is when I met you Jane (Janie), when I became design partners with a close friend of yours.
After 20 years of graphic design I started to get itchy for the next thing. My side hustle is dogs. I am involved in the animal welfare space sitting on the board of Animal Haven, a shelter in Soho, NYC. I knew my next life was in the dog space and started brainstorming with a friend of mine (now partner Regina) about what to do. We felt like there was a white space in the pet world when it came to grooming. Everything had been humanized from food and clothing to supplements and dog beds. But no one seemed to care that their dogs were getting bathed in chemicals and toxic ingredients and then sleeping in our beds. We modeled PRIDE+GROOM on a human beauty brand. Not all dogs have the same needs. For example, dogs who shed need different products than all the doodles. We wanted products that were not only NOT harmful but beneficial, amazing smelling and all-natural all wrapped up in beautiful packaging.
That would have to be getting chosen as one of Oprah’s Favorite Things 3 months after launching! It led to a million opportunities and sales and we are forever grateful.
Favorite dog breed?
Chihuahua. It wasn’t until I fostered one during covid that I realized how funny and special they are. I now have 4 dogs – 2 chis and 2 golden doodles.
What is your #1 must-have in your purse?
Disposable tooth brush. Everyone makes fun of me but to me a quick tooth brushing is better than a shower.
Wow this one is hard for me as I am a HUGE tv watcher and nothing is too low for me - Survivor, Love is Blind, Love on the Spectrum… I could go on and on.
